As of Dec 8 2022, the official driver on edimax.com website support Ubuntu kernel up to v5.4 only. Any version higher than v5.4 is not supported.
However, starting from kernel v5.15, Linux dropped the "old" rtl8188eu staging driver and replaced it with newer driver r8188eu maintained by lwfinger. You don't need to install any driver, i.e. Plug-and-Play in kernel v5.15. If you have kernel v5.5-v5.14 or there is no staging build-in driver, you can manually install the open source driver on https://github.com/lwfinger/rtl8188eu.
