As of Dec 2022, the official Linux drivers on edimax.com site support Linux kernel up to v5.3 only. The driver won't support kernel newer than v5.3.
However, starting from kernel v5.8, there is built-in driver for Realtek based bluetooth adapters. You don't need to install any driver, i.e. Plug-and-Play. We use Mint21 kernel v5.15 in this demo.
You can just go ahead to go to Bluetooth settings to scan for available bluetooth devices.
In case you have troubles to use BT-8500 in Mint 21, make sure your system is updated with commands under terminal.
$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt upgrade
$ sudo reboot
